A sustainable cinema experience for outdoor movie screenings, presentations, parties, sports and community events by Tropicol productions.

Our goal is to raise people's awareness by teaching the importance of sustainable energy, energy efficiency, and the search for new sources of renewable energy.

Darwin Solar Cinema is locally owned business and managed by Colin Carthew. The Cinema has been up and running for over 7 years screening movies in Darwin and remote areas. ​

Colin is heavily focused on recycling, reducing and renewables, running 3 vehicles on different ratios of used veggie oil. One of these is a 22 seater charter bus which charters for the schools and clubs around Darwin.

Darwin Solar Cinema has full Public Liability Insurance with TIO Darwin . ​​

Although all equipment is provided with the service, Darwin Solar Cinema is not responsilble for organising the licensing or royalties of screened movies. ​​

What is needed:

• Client to organise access, keys and permits to the site
• Access for the bus to set up and to run the cinema
• Minimum access of 2 hours before dark
• A large flat grassy area for the audience
• Preferably with no other lighting (street lights etc)
• An area that is out of the wind (screen acts like a large sail)
• Its important that the water sprinklers are off, especially the night before so the grass is dry

We approached Colin Carthew from Solar Media because he offers a stand alone mobile cinema to screen films powered entirely by the sun as we are keen to work with sustainable local businesses. Colin was accommodating with council requirements, flexible with their busy dry season schedule and available at short notice. Colin allows plenty of time for set up and troubleshooting and our events have always run smoothly. The quality of sound and image are excellent. Being able to screen films along the foreshore is a fabulous and magical Top End experience. I found the experience very professional and reliable and have always been more than happy with their service. I would recommend Solar Media to people who want to screen films to large audiences in a location of your choice, with the knowledge that your event is powered by renewable energy. The Gardens hired Darwin Solar Cinema on a number of occasions for our community events . Its was great have the outdoor solar cinema at The Gardens as we don't have mains 240 volt power. ​ It was an awesome setup, the picture was large and clear and the sound ​ was loud. While we were having our garden tours before the movies ​ Colin was happy to DJ some back ground music. We are looking forward ​ to booking Darwin Solar Cinema again this dry season. ​

We hired Solar Cinema for our movie night as part of National Science Week in October 2016. It was a great set-up and Colin made everything very easy from the booking, through to the cinema projection. The event was a huge success and people were impressed that we were running the movie screen on solar power.
